Fifth Graders & The Mysteries of Harris Burdick

Today the students in Mrs. Worley’s room began to create stories around images from a famous book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg.  Chris Van Allsburg has also written many other books (Jumanji, The Polar Express, Zathura, The Sweetest Fig just to name a few).  He is one of Mrs. Worley’s  favorite authors because he really makes you go “huh, wow…”as you read. The Mysteries of Harris Burdick  is a collection of images that include a title and one or two sentences that create great suspense to the viewer.  We used these pictures today as a jumping off point to write engaging small moment stories that our readers wouldn’t want to put down.  I encourage you to ask your child to see their writing.  Many students brought home their notebooks tonight because they wanted to keep writing. I can not wait to see the stories they have created!

Welcome to Mrs. Worley’s Class Blog

I am so excited to get this blog up and running.  Throughout the school year (hopefully weekly) I will posting questions and helpful hints to support the students learn more deeply about topics we are focusing on in class.  I encourage students to regularly check the blog and comment on questions that I have posed.  Feel free to save this blog as a favorite so that students can easily access it from home.
